Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union

Disputes

The AMWU believes that people should have the right to raise concerns and resolve issues at their workplace. It is vital that workers are able to try and resolve workplace disputes through an efficient and straight forward process.

What should I do if I think I have a workplace dispute?

Check your agreement, award and workplace policy to find out what your rights are in relation to your issue. Sometimes disputes are about the interpretation of particular clauses or policy, so make sure you read through them carefully to know what your rights are.

What do I need to progress a workplace dispute?

Make sure that you collect any evidence that you may need to support your claim. This might include your diary or notes, payslips, memos, letters or anything else that might support your position.

How do I progress a dispute?

Every agreement and award has a disputes resolution clause. The dispute clause sets out the process as to how to raise and progress a workplace dispute.

Most dispute processes involve a number of steps culminating in the dispute being taken to the Fair Work Commission for external assistance in resolving the workplace issues. Remember, some disputes procedures have time frames so make sure to follow the process carefully.

What support can the union give me if I have a dispute?

When all members at your workplace support a position together, your dispute will be stronger. Delegates are trained in dispute resolution and processes so make sure you speak with your delegates and other members before pursuing a dispute.

If a dispute cannot be resolved at the workplace level, the AMWU has expert industrial and legal staff that can provide advice and assistance to members at your workplace.
